Succeed in Practicum and Your Internship

How to stay motivated throughout the semester

  1. Step away for a second to breathe
  2. Remember your long term goals and why you are doing this in the first place.
  3. Call up a loved one and ask for some words of encouragement.
  4. Think of times in your life where you have accomplished the unthinkable.

Don’t forget

After an assignment is available, make sure to always check when it is due that day. Do not assume that the task is due at midnight because assignments in this class are rarely due at midnight if it is not your weekly Intern Diary and Timesheet.

  1. Check the due date and time for every assignment.
  2. Every Saturday at midnight, you must turn in your weekly Intern Diary and Timesheet.

Throughout the semester, we had a perfect amount of assignments. We have a very understanding teacher who gives the right amount of work to where we can actually learn and not focus on merely turning in the assignment on time.

Assignments this semester included:

  • Weekly Internship Diaries and Timesheets
  • Host Evaluation Form
  • Signed Intern Contract
  • Eportfolio with tabs complete
  • Resume
  • Book report Presentations
  • Employee profile
  • Explain our S.M.A.R.T. Goals

Guest speaker

We had a very accomplished guest speaker, Robin Turner, Director of Editorial Diversity Initiatives at POLITICO, who shared an abundance of knowledge that can be applied to both journalism interns and recently graduated journalists.

How to stand out in Journalism

To stand out, you need to be confident, and self-growth is significant in this field. Apart from that, you need to work hard and show your passion. Standing out is never hard, be who you are, ask questions regarding anything you don’t know, speak during office hours or to your boss, and show up to class/work early.

How this class will help your career

A big lesson that I learned in this class is the importance of turning in your work on time and making sure you prioritize your time and plan it out meticulously. To be a successful journalist, you need to be able to understand how to multitask on a large scale while staying calm and efficient, and quick I believe that Ms. Thomas did a fantastic job at teaching us valuable lessons that journalist need to have

in order to succeed in their careers

Dear Reporter,

I was assigned to record a video for my reporter, where I outlined her first assignment and details to complete it.

Dear Tia Lowe,

I enjoy your articles on Howard University News Service. I would like to assign you to write an article that focuses on the transformation of fashion during the pandemic and going forward. Your assignment is to write an article about the resurgence of DIY fashion during COVID-19, how it’s impacting college kids, and what this means for our generation’s future.

Spend some time speaking with three to five Howard students or other DIY Fashion resources. Reach out to DIY pages on social media for an interview, or Howard Students whom you know are into DIY fashion. You can also reach out to new businesses or ones who have had to change their inventory to see if they have been creating DIY fashion like masks, sewing or crocheting, creating ripped jeans, making shorts, etc. Wool And The Gang is a profitable business for this.

Please read articles recently written on this topic, for example, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 6. Use them as guides to make your story better and include information they didn’t. What will make your story different is having more voices in your piece as well as taking a look into how the resurgence of DIY fashion during COVID-19 is impacting our age group, college kids.

Make sure to briefly explain the background of DIY where it originated. It’s origins lie in the anti-establishment punk DIY movement and the free festival movement of the 1960’s and 1970’s, maybe tie into the peaceful background of its origins during items of turmoil. Take a look at DIY videos and clips that have gone viral, which can easily be found on TikTok under “DIY Fashion” to get a better grasp of the viral trends as of late. Also, compile stats and polls on the increase of loungewear and DIY Fashion (can be found linked in select articles).

The article should be 1,000 words, and we would need it by Oct. 2, 2020. Please include a source list with names and contact information for the people you interview and links to background information and other research. Please embed information in your article and make sure to include at least three of the following components: the article, photos, stand-alone audio, audio slideshows, video, animation, graphics, or any other visual tools, plus a social media plan.

A few questions to consider while reporting are: Have stores seen a downfall of certain items and others’ increase? What’s the Future for Fashion Amid COVID-19? Does the public believe everything will go back to how it was before COVID-19 fashion-wise?

Thanks for your time. We look forward to working with you. If you have any questions, please call, text or email.

Reflection Piece

Below are my thoughts so far on my Fall 2020 Interactive Editing class at Howard University.

Coming into this class, I had no idea what to expect.

I have never had a class with two teachers, and while that is initially intimidating, I appreciate the fact that I can go to two people if I have questions, and I can also learn from two smart women.

I am sad that this class is virtual. I feel like the class would be more fun if it were to be in person. I could easily be face-to-face with my teachers, ask them questions, and ask for feedback without having to wait.

Our first assignment was to edit an article about COVID-19 safety in schools. I love writing, but I also love videography and all things that capture others’ experiences in a fun and interactive way.

My initial thoughts were that this class was based more on video production because with the name “editing” I immediately thought of videography. I was initially very shocked because I had not even questioned it, and when I read the syllabus, I had to change my mind frame.

I am happy that this class focuses on writing because I love improving my writing. When my writing improves, I become more passionate about my passion and more excited to carry out my work.

I enjoy this course so far, and I have never done anything like it before. I have always had to write from scratch, so it is fascinating editing someone else’s work and seeing the mistakes they made. I’m hoping to improve my editing and become a more thorough editor. There is time I may read over stories too quickly and miss something basic. I want to improve my editing skills so that I can catch more errors quicker.

I would like to consistently be a good editor as that will help with my articles. I would also like to practice different ways of writing a story. I have a lot of practice with the inverted pyramid style, and I would like to know how to be more of a storyteller.

I honestly thought the course would be about editing videography learning software and working with your class while doing so. I am excited that this class is about writing and becoming a good editor along. I appreciate this class because it teaches me how to be a good writer. While I’m editing my peers’ work, I see many mistakes that they make, and it teaches me not to do them with my work.

This class requires you to be very responsible and self-sufficient. I appreciate that, as well. Although it might not be fun for students not to get as much help as they would like, it sets us up for the future, and my career, it teaches me to rely on myself, work hard and apply myself.

Dennis Overbye’s Blog Style

By Énoa Gibson

Dennis Overbye has a very compelling blog. For example; on Wednesday, astronomers released what they said were “the most detailed images ever taken of the surface of our sun,” and Overbyes storytelling made reading the blog engaing and easily understandable.

This blog is compelling as it used many different media techniques to draw in the reader. There are visuals that move, time-lapsed videos, photo galleries, and interviews used at storytelling techniques. I admire the variety of storytelling techniques he uses and will work to incorporate more multimedia techniques in my future blog. With the occasional reference to twitter and instagram, Overbyes’ writing style personalizes the stories and brings a more diverse audience who does not only enjoy reading the news but also seeing and hearing it.

Overbyes’ blog is updated bi-weekly, and his bio added insight into why he chose to write about the topics he did. For example in his “about me,” it states that he has been covering the universe for more than 30 years.” The information in his bio gave understanding to his interests.
